[Close-up] A dog. Submissive bystander? Active participant? Either way, its fur ripples in the wind as it watches, tracking the movements as if attempting to make sense of the absurd ballet unfolding before it. The Michelin wet handling ring, reserved for full size machines and big money, now plays host to this surreal choreography of children’s cars, their presence both ridiculous and oddly graceful. It is an arena of absurd repetition, of skidding and correction, of something like control but not quite. A car wavers, corrects, wavers again. The dance continues, unlearning mastery in pursuit of something closer to instinct. Here, the machines flirt with uncertainty, tracing loops of defiance—somewhere between play and precision, between a game and something unknowingly serious.But this is only what would have taken place—what might have unfolded in a video dreamt up by artist Dani Reynolds, had Michelin agreed to let us film on their wet handling track. Instead, these cars—once motorized toy cars for children—have been reimagined, altered. No longer bound to a linear trajectory of forward and backward, they now spin freely, set atop office chair wheels, their movement untethered, directionless, ecstatic. Their surfaces, given a glow up through layers of papier-mâché and silver gargoyle emblems, seem at once ornamental and defiant, relics of a mythology that never existed. And so they find themselves not skimming over a slick test track but instead staged in a space that once housed a flower shop and, before that, a hair salon—now evoking the setup of an ambiguous commercial space, yet never fully resolving into one. On the walls, two paintings on latex depict different images of dogs with varying hairstyles, reminiscent of the styling guides often found in the local salon. Michelin, hair salons, flowers, dogs—associations that at first seem absurd but instead reveal a braid of the city’s history and its shifting spaces and inhabitants, traced and unraveled by Dani Reynolds during their second residency in Clermont-Ferrand.1Over the course of three weeks, Dani Reynolds worked onsite, chipping away paint from previously hidden mirrors, applying gestures reminiscent of a hairstylist, florist, or dog groomer—trimming back the space’s invisible hair to revive it, revealing and framing its charming imperfections. Disparate elements, plucked from their typical contexts, are now presented in a dizzying yet humorous arrangement (think bouquet), or score. The choreographic and performative aspects of these professions are reflected in Dani’s practice, where they orchestrate moments that simultaneously engage with the sincerity of failure while recalling the looping nature of uneasiness and obsession, like the doom scroll.This looping nature appears in the TikTok-esque video playing on repeat from an iPhone stuck onto a mirror via an influencer must-have suction pad. Reminiscent of Canine Choreography—a performance Dani produced in which the artist danced with four-legged creatures—the video presented here questions the nature of the companion species. Rather than a choreography between human and dog, the choreography here unfolds between human and a 360-spinning, papier-mâché-covered, automatic toy car mounted atop office chair wheels. This video reflects the idea of thrown projections2—both through the act of performance itself and through the mediated lens of social media. A thrown projection is, after all, a construct that enacts the same principle twice over—the projection of a projection, or the thrownness of something already thrown—and in this way, both domesticated companions and social media platforms serve as reflections of this recursive logic, absorbing and refracting human desires, anxieties, and performances back at us.The serious expression, the dryness of the performers’3 stare, brings us, finally, to the title: Fluff Dry. Watch This Space Alice Springs (2021) A ‘trade-off’ is a process of balancing two desirable but opposing forces. It is an acknowledgement and agreement to both loss and gain. There are three collaborative processes presented in Trade-Off: a suite of sculptures, a diptych of paintings and a textual response. The sculptures are the repurposing of a collection of trophies that were donated by Dani’s partner, Thomas McCammon, a childhood tennis champion. Through an accumulative process of hand moulding paper clay, stickering and bejewelling, these trophies are transformed into amorphous forms. The paintings presented have been developed in collaboration with Tom’s mum, Darrel West. For one-year Dani and Darrel worked together to produce a series of paintings that merge their two distinctive styles, from which these two works were selected. These paintings are a layering of familial responsibility and affinities, of agency and desire, becoming the nexus for a new intimacy to emerge, but an intimacy suffused by the risk of working together. The final element of Trade-off is a text written by Tom. Tom writes: ‘a nut of space, clears its throat for a new situation.’ The opacity of this poetic text blurs the distinction between the exhibited objects and Tom and Dani’s relationship. One that “operates according to a cycle of failure and repetition, of non-attainment and replay; [one that] is a punctuated performance. A rule is drawn. An action is required. An attempt is made. Over and over, again and again.” [1] Here, the rule drawn was twofold: make a painting; replicate a garden statue. The actions as well: paint; mould. Attempts were multiple, failed, and repeated— over and over, again and again. Yet, rather than considering this setting oneself up for failure as a pity party, Dani invites us to imagine failure as a way of refuting dominant goal oriented ideology. How? Through a choreographing of ambivalence. The space is thus a partition of said ambivalence, and the repeated gestures, a series of rehearsals, as we’re thrown for a Sisyphean loop. There’s something lingering, hesitating in Dani’s work, a kind of drawn out gesticulation before an eventual final act. Like a metabolic process. The artist’s obsession for a handmade Pekingese dog lawn statue in their neighbourhood led to a deal with a garden manager for a temporary loan of the masterpiece— a catalyst for the artist to learn moulding techniques formerly foreign to them. The replication and repetition reveal themselves then both as attempts at attaining the imperfect handmade mini-monument, and as ways of avoiding any fixed, dictated notion of what it is. This monumental ambivalence sneaks its way into Dani’s large-scale paintings as well. Hanging from up-right metal structures, the canvases are not only extracted from a canonical history of painting, but also transformed into bearers of other images. Small photographs of objects and situations— they, too, ambivalent— encrust themselves on the backs of the paintings, doubling their nature.Although adorned with an unclear status, the paintings are not to be considered as failures, but rather as supports of ambivalence that document that very feeling: their surfaces bare traces of figuration that disappear behind successive layers of unsureness. “Something scratched out or scribbled over = willful act of erasure, anger, negation, disgust, hate; embarrassment, shame, or a wish to make invisible or to obliterate,” wrote Amy Sillman. [2] The scribbling here may be a willful act of erasure, but rather than solely being understood as done in negation, it reveals the ambivalence necessary to navigating an incoherent world, and the beauty of existing in multiple ways.
